iPhone Safari Browser Crash

I’m noticing my browser crashing every now and then. At first I thought it was just something I was doing, but now I’m certain it’s the browser. The last crash occurred while watching a trailer on the Apple trailer site for iPhone. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Safari has crashed on me several times already. Hopefully, Apple will release a patch to address this soon.

  2. 2 JP Jul 1st, 2007 at 10:46 pm

Yes! My browser crashed every five to ten minutes today. Which is not cool. I’m not sure what to do…go to the apple store? I won’t return the iphone, but I do want to know if it’s just a handful of phones doing this, because if it is I want a different one!

  3. 3 Ed Jul 1st, 2007 at 11:05 pm

Hopefully we’ll see an update for this soon. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one seeing this.

Same here, i was on the phone with apple care for an hour today got the old run around and was told to resent, restore, airplane mode, etc… nothing works so wait for the patch it is…anyone get the same problem when using google maps?

  5. 5 Robert Plank Jul 4th, 2007 at 5:19 am

It reset several times on me today. I was on cnn.com and digg.com. This is my first Apple product, and I am anxious to see how well they are at product support.

  6. 6 mike Jul 4th, 2007 at 5:44 am

safari has crashed at least 20 times today! I’m really disappointed : (

I’m getting crashes as well on Safari and Google Maps. Haven’t really been able to use either function on my iPhone for more than a few minutes at a time because of the crashes.

  10. 10 Ed Jul 4th, 2007 at 9:31 am

Chris, I would agree, especially because it went out while watching a trailer. But I just had it crash while clicking on an RSS.

  11. 11 G-Dog Jul 4th, 2007 at 9:32 am

Ha! Chris is obviously typing on his iPhone. :)
My Safari crashes fairly often, as well; although I don’t mind so much as it’s just a phone. I can’t seem to listen to music and surf the web without the iPod app crashing, as well. Google Maps has crashes several times.

I assume this will all be fixed via an update, soon.

  12. 12 Thistle Down Jul 4th, 2007 at 12:59 pm

If Safari or other apps are crashing go to

Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings

Try this first. If it doesn’t help, it did for me. Then you will want to reset from iTunes WHICH WILL ERASE ALL DATA (music/movies/contacts) but don’t whine, just re-sync.

If that doesn’t work, go to Apple and swap it for another one. (Call the store first to see if they have swappers in stock.)

I was also having safari crashing problems that seemed to be getting worse. It got to the point that I couldn’t even read one web page without a crash. A simple restart seems to have fixed the problem. Haven’t had one crash since. I suspect a bug like a memory leak that gets worse the longer you go without restarting the system. YMMV

    Cheers,

    Ben

  14. 14 Ktbaxter Jul 4th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

The restart worked gangbusters and I was having regular Safari and Google maps crashes. Thanks!

  15. 15 Kevin Hoffman Jul 6th, 2007 at 7:21 am

    Me too…Apple are you listening??

Crashes every 3-5th time I use Safari. In Maps, at CNN, at apple.com, etc.

  16. 16 Aaron Jul 6th, 2007 at 10:39 am

I was experiencing a lot of Google Maps and Safari crashes as well. So far, a power off/on cycle seems to have fixed it.

  17. 17 dogzilla Jul 6th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

Interesting reading your experiences. I’ve had a fair number of crashes, resulting, I think, from using Safari like I do my desktop Safari: I leave many windows open. I think iPhone webkit has two obvious problems: a vicious memory leak and serious instanility in the plugin architecture. I suggest this not only explains the crashing when Safari/Google maps (which presumably uses webkit)are left open, but also Apple’s decision to exclude Flash, Java, and only minimal video support. Weird that they shipped anyway - i hope this doesn’t indicate a systemic problem in hardware. Tonight the iPhone gave me a scare and hung up hard. Wouldn’t restart for @ 3 mins.

On the plus side, I typed this whole thing on the keyboard pretty quickly, so I’m getting better.

  18. 18 Tim Jul 7th, 2007 at 3:28 pm

I’ve had quite a few hangups so far and it was really annoying me. I reset the phone (without a restore) and it seems to me working fine now. Hopefully when they release a patch to fix this memory leak or whatever, they will also enable landscape keyboard use for email and notes apps. Typing this post is great in lanscape mode!

  19. 19 Rick Jul 7th, 2007 at 5:05 pm

Yes, the Safari version for iPhone is Microsoft quality. I doubt they even bothered to test it…

  20. 20 jim davis Jul 7th, 2007 at 5:48 pm

I’ve had several anonymous restarts on the iPhone. I think it’s also a memory leak issue myself, after larger pages it tends to happen. The only bright spot seems to be that it keeps your last web address so when you get that restart it reloads the page. It doesn’t boad well for me that it crashes so easily. I guess that’s what we get for being a early adoptors.

  21. 21 thedude Jul 8th, 2007 at 11:57 am

Way too many crashes. Hoping for a fix VERY soon for this very expensive product.

  22. 22 pablo Jul 8th, 2007 at 7:36 pm

Thanks, Ben. A power on/off cycle seems to have fixed this for me. Safari isn’t crashing & I can listen to music & surf at the same time too without iPod crashes.

  23. 23 Bite da Apple Jul 9th, 2007 at 6:37 pm

Safari, Google Maps, YouTube all crash!. Even Ipod feature and Phone crashes! After all that I still love this piece of S**T! All software related issues which will be addressed with an itunes update. Question s when?

  24. 24 Rick Jul 9th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

I concur with the restart recommendation. Crashes of increasing frequency stopped immediately after restart. Something is leaking memory for sure. Cupertino will figure it out and patch it soon. Meanwhile the workaround is painless.

  25. 25 Bryant Jul 10th, 2007 at 3:30 pm

Thanks for the cold reboot idea. I shutdown my iPhone completely and it seems that all of the functionality is a lot more stable (safari, iPod, google maps). Hopefully this will be fixed in the near future instead of forcing a reboot every day.

  26. 26 Tom Jul 16th, 2007 at 12:09 pm

I too am having a problem with safari crashing unexpectedly. Alos, when I’m listening to the iPod and try to use Safari at the same time the iPod crashes on occasion. Not everytime, but every so often.

  27. 27 greg88 Jul 17th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

yea been having the same problem lately, hopefully apple will release a patch soon because besides safari crashing everyone in a while the iphone is just great

  28. 28 David Jul 17th, 2007 at 5:11 pm

Maps and Safari crash every time I enter after about 30 - 45 seconds

  29. 29 Ransome Jul 18th, 2007 at 7:32 am

Powercycling the iPhone seems to fix the problem for me. I agree that it acts like a memory leak.

  30. 30 Smith Jul 18th, 2007 at 2:50 pm

Safari has crashed on every iPhone I have used, including 2 at the apple store itself, viewing their pages on their WiFi. Also two friends consistently crash every 30 seconds or so. This is clearly a widespread problem. Any remedies?

  31. 31 Rodrigo Jul 19th, 2007 at 2:37 pm

uhh!! im so glad to know im not the only one having this problem :D:D when i’m on Safari and doing another thing at the same time (example: listening to music while on safari) my iphone crashes.. hope Apple can fix this as soon as possible!!!

  32. 32 Brad Jul 21st, 2007 at 9:46 am

Today, I started having constant Safari crashes while surfing. I could only use the browser for 10 - 15 seconds before Safari would just close. Tried powering down the phone and powering back up — that seemed to fix the problem. Incidentally, this is the first time I have powered down in the 6 days that I had the phone — I was just using the sleep mode.

  33. 33 Todd Jul 22nd, 2007 at 11:54 pm

I had no problems with Safari crashing when I purchased my iPhone. But while on vacation, Safari suddenly started crashing on a regular basis. Sometimes it couldn’t finish opening the home page, other times it would crash while simply scrolling. I thought perhaps it was due to large file sizes, but text only rss pages crashed as well. I just tried the suggested reset command. Much more stable (thank you!), but I can still crash Safari by going one or two links deep.

I wonder if utilizing Airplane Mode triggered something…

  34. 34 TIm P Jul 23rd, 2007 at 4:10 pm

I reset mine and everything seemed ok. But I went to yellowbook.com and tried to enter some data in a data field and the browser crashed.

I experieince this a lot when doing data entry on entry fields.

  35. 35 ken Jul 24th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

my myspace page would crash consistantly everytime…. the reset setting worked
    thanks.

  36. 36 Chad Jul 25th, 2007 at 9:11 am

My safari browser and google maps always crash, even if there;s just one window open. And maybe it’s just youtube, but when it gets dark outside, i cant watch any youtube videos.

  37. 37 jim Jul 26th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

Just turn off the phone and turn it back on (hold down the top button) i do it once a day now and safari and google maps never crashes.

  38. 38 AZ-Iphoner Jul 27th, 2007 at 7:02 pm

Safari began crashing once or twice a day two weeks ago.
My browsing habits or the websites I visit have not changed since I purchased the Iphone.

The browser is now crashing every single time I access my e-mail and almost every site I go on.

I have to relaunch safari several times before I get the entire page.

I’ve noticed that I happens on graphically heavy sites.

I agree that it may be a memory issue.

Apple needs to patch this problems - it is extremely annoying - I squeeze my phone a little tighter every time the browser crashes.

The phone is still awesome but WE NEED A FIX!!

  39. 39 Bazyli D. Jul 28th, 2007 at 3:09 pm

Brutal, to be so excited about a gadget and have it crash this often. The reset feature works untill you visit a few web pages and than puff - all over we begin. How about the setup wonders. I spent the entire setup day at AT&T, fantastic people but not one of them trained to set up this phone. Lots of work to be done I hope they release some updates soon.

  40. 40 lisa Aug 4th, 2007 at 11:51 am

Yes I had this problem, and there is an update in itunes you can download to hopefully solve the problem. Good luck!

  41. 41 abe Aug 20th, 2007 at 7:02 pm

i have a problem with the iphone freezing on websites, id be scrolling down a site and it would not respond this happens especially on pages rhat have a large number of pictures, an example is a page on a car forum. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

  42. 42 Reth Aug 21st, 2007 at 7:19 pm

Mine was crashing every time i was trying to log onto my myspace. I cleared the cache, history and cookies…I also rebooted the phone by holding down the wake/sleep button and sliding the red slider. Waited a couple of seconds then pushed the wake button again while holding it down till the apple logo appears. It seemed to have solved the problem. TRY IT!

  43. 43 Andrew Biggs Sep 9th, 2007 at 1:53 pm

I hadn’t powered my iPhone down in over two weeks, and got to the point where Safari was almost completely unusable due to the constant “crashing”. Following the suggestion of Ben, and others on this thread, I power-cycled and it seems to be fine (for now). I guess this is to be expected for a 1.0 product. I half expect to start seeing BSDs here any day now ;-).

  44. 44 jamaph Sep 16th, 2007 at 11:28 pm

I was having bad safari crashes also. I was beginning to get worried and started planning to go to the apple store and reproduce one of these “crashes”

But before I got to hasty I googled the problem (on my iPhone) and found this blog with bens suggestion. I bought my iPhone 3 days ago and hadn’t powered it down once, I only was using the sleep option. So I used bens reboot idea and… It worked! No crashes and I typed this on my iphone while listening to this superior most kickass iPod yet!

    -confessed iphone lover,

    Jamaph

  45. 45 Raghu Sep 24th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

My Iphone too kept crashing from safari, also google maps and youtube crashed a couple of times. I think its a memory heap issue as we do not terminate an application appropriately. We just hit the home button to exit an app and when we have opened too many things and we do not close these apps, there will be dangling sessions which is causing memory leakage and hence whenever you open an app which needs some memory, the app crashes. So resetting the session by resetting the phone is a temporary workaround for the issue until we get a fix for this issue in a couple of weeks hopefully. Your ipod is the least likely to crash as you ensure that the ipod is not playing a song when you press the home button. It has the appropriate exit functions. So a software patch which will clean up all sessions when you exit an app should do the trick. Hope they do it soon. So till then keep resetting the phone once a day to clear dangling sessions

  46. 46 Michael Oct 1st, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Yes, I do have that problem and was told to restore my iPhone. If not take it in to the Apple Store. It started in update 1.0.2.

  47. 47 Enzo Oct 7th, 2007 at 6:03 pm

Same here. Safari was crashin’ like a muhfuh’ but I did the General Settings / reset all and seems to be fine now.

  48. 48 J Oct 11th, 2007 at 6:49 pm

it’s the poor java environment on iPhone I guess. ihphone safari crashes ecwrytimw I use jivetalk, hope apple will fix this . we aren’t paying 399 for a toy. we need something that look good and work like other pda phone. if apple can’t solve these problems language pack keyboard set/ crashes/ widget compatibility(it claims iPhone uses “osx”) /heat problem/ poor speaker/video recording function/ office function/ perhaps an iPhone bootcamp!!!! so we can REALLY start using iPhone as a smart phone with windows? oh come on steve jobs..you can do it better

  49. 49 jason Oct 15th, 2007 at 8:00 am

yeah, had the same problem. Its a good thing that when you reopen safari.. All of the windows and sites are atill there. A simple reload would continue with what i waz doing before it crashes.

Honestly, id thoguht that i would find a fix over the net. But after reading through this site.. Ill just wait for the update.

  50. 50 Sergio Oct 21st, 2007 at 2:14 pm

Just turn it on and then off (reboot). It worked for me, serious!

  51. 51 Steve Oct 26th, 2007 at 6:17 am

The crash caused by SummerBoard, restore you phone and don’t install SummerBoard and you got a very stable iPhone!

  52. 52 rick Oct 27th, 2007 at 5:10 am

Power on power off does it. First noticed it after going to Apple Iphone website and trying to view the fingertip clips..

To reiterate someone else observation I am finally getting comfortable with this keyboard, its like learning to ride a bike … suddenly there is that moment when it all comes together.

  53. 53 Tibor Oct 28th, 2007 at 6:32 am

If you remove summerboard, and have a lot of ikons, how does one access the other ikons as they will not be in view without summerboard?

If you reset all in settings, setting/general,reset all…. does it remove custom wallpapers, tweaks, etc?

    Thanks,

  54. 54 Raj Nov 2nd, 2007 at 7:41 am

Usually happens to me if I have too many windows open in Safari or if I’m on Safari and listening to music at the same time.

  55. 55 Juan Nov 2nd, 2007 at 9:41 am

The reset worked perfectly for me. It certainly saved me a lot of time since I thought I was going to have to go to the Apple store and get a replacement. Thanks!!!

  56. 56 Michael Nov 12th, 2007 at 7:03 am

I’ve been having the same issue, Safari crashing. The first time I noticed it was while surfing the Apple Store. I’ll try powering it down. I’m also going to a retail store to get a new iMac so I’ll talk to them about it too.

  57. 57 JD Nov 18th, 2007 at 12:56 pm

Legend !! Safari crashes have been driving me mad, just found this post, safari crashed, came back, read the solution and now fingers crossed all is well :)

  58. 58 Zaptrax Nov 21st, 2007 at 4:43 pm

It works! Safari was crashing every single time I used it but the power-down (hold the on/off switch on top and then use the red slider) worked like a charm. Maybe that should be a daily routine until Apple issues a patch that fixes the problem.
    Z

  59. 59 Sid Dec 5th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Be sure to power down the iPhone once in every 2 days.

  60. 60 john wisdom Dec 17th, 2007 at 10:39 am

Same issue here. I was in the middle of downloading the restore update when i found this board. So i tried the reset and have gone from not being able to visit a single page without Safari crashing to back to normal. I will charge my phone and when its fully charged for now on i will automatically do a restart.

    Thanks.

    Note: Steve, please fix this.

  61. 61 RK Jan 4th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

Man did I need that solution. I hadn’t powered off in two months, andthis was a life saver. I was getting real annoyed till ibfound this due to crashes every five minutes. Whew, its all clear now. Should be a daily routine from now on.

  62. 62 eldanny Jan 19th, 2008 at 7:35 am

I’ve had the same experience. Went to the apple store ad spoke to a genius- they were NO help at all. He just said it was a known problem and it will be addressed in the future with an update :( The power on/off cycle does help though!!

  63. 63 arnie Jan 30th, 2008 at 6:19 am

try clearing history in settings , its helped a lot.

  64. 64 j0e Feb 4th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

yah my iphone has been crashing all the time lately. I think it happens when u goto sites with two many graphics or video files like pluged in. I think it has something to do with the small processor and how unstable the system is still. I have faith that Stevey will fix it soon!

  65. 65 will Feb 16th, 2008 at 1:58 am

I’m typing this on a touch on which safari was crashing regularly until I reset all settings now it works well

  66. 66 collin Mar 10th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Maybe this will be addressed in the iPhone 2.0 update coming in June, or if enough bugs are reported it will be fixed in a patch?? (although that might not be plausible considering it hasn’t been fixed in almost a year)

Although, a HUGE change in the iphone software (which there will be with apps, enterprise etc) could also lead to motivation to correct some major bugs.

For now, off/on resetting works fine…

  67. 67 Jeff Apr 13th, 2008 at 12:03 pm

Me too. Very irritating. It’s to the point where I don’t even use safari because it crashes so often on the iPhone. The iPod crashes frequently as well; particularly if I select an album to play using coverflow view. I even watched a rented movie on it on the plane earlier and it crashed a couple times early on. I still love this thing and i would NEVER return it, but Apple needs to get their sh*t together and get a patch for this issue post haste.

  68. 68 jianwu Apr 20th, 2008 at 12:02 am

Me too. I’m a bit suspicious on apply’s software development and quality control capability. As a web browser is so important for iPhone. How can they release such an unstable product without properly test. And this issue has been around for so long time. They still didn’t release a patch to fix it. That’s really sad as an apple customer.
