I had the proto theme installed in Firefox. Solution: I went into the firefox pull-down menu: TOOLS - AD ONS - Themes and disabled the theme. Now the forward and back buttons work as expected. When I click the back or forward button in firefox, instead of moving one page back or forwards, it drops down the history. Hmmm. Annoying.
